Mareeba and the Tablelands have a very wide and diverse habitat of Australian wildlife. It is very possible you may encounter many of these on your journey to this region.

There are more than 400 bird species to be found within a two hour drive of Mareeba and many great spots to see them. Ask at your local Visitor information centre or at reception to learn more.

Marsupials abound in the region including: the Mareeba Rock Wallaby, Whiptail Wallaby, Agile wallaby, Swamp Wallaby, Rufous Bettong, Eastern Grey Kangaroo and two types of Wallaroo, the Common and Antilopine.

Possums (3), Gliders (4), Phascogale (1), Northern Quoll (1), Bandicoots (2), Antechinus (1), Platypus, Echidna, Micro-Bats (5) and fruit Bats (2) are just some of the amazing mammals to be found in the region.


Frogs (18) and reptiles (34) and many types of remarkable insects go to make up the rich environment you can explore at your leisure while staying in the Mareeba region.

Some animals to be wary of, whilst driving, are wallabies and kangaroos which at certain times of the year are abundant on our roadways looking for green pick and special care is to be taken whilst travelling at night.
