Mareeba the
Aboriginal name for "Meeting of the Waters"
was first settled by pastoralist, John Atherton
in 1877. At that time Mareeba became a busy
coach change on the track from Port Douglas,
following the discovery of tin at Herberton.
The railway reached Mareeba in 1893, and it
grew from a coach change to a busy railway town. Today, the
Mareeba district is an important primary producer with a variety
of crops being grown in the area including tobacco, cattle,
sugar cane, poultry, vegetables, coffee and a various array
of tropical fruits.
The Mareeba/Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme provides
adequate water supply to ensure that agricultural industries
continue to be developed at a rapid rate in the coming years.
