Rail Ambulance

Originally a London bus and subsequently utilised by the Atherton Butter Factory, this train was used to transport cream on the Millaa Millaa branch Railway line with a Queensland railways driver from 1926 to around 1940.

It was purchased by the Mareeba Hospital Board after the War for 25 pounds.

The engine was rebuilt by Carl Zahlten at the Queensland Railways Townsville workshops, and the Rail Ambulance arrived in Mareeba on Anzac Day 1949.

Mareeba Rail Ambulance

During its first two years of operation to June 1951, it had travelled nearly 12,000 miles. The Mareeba Rail Ambulance was last used for a trip to Chillagoe in 1983.
