Tableland Tobacco Industry

Tobacco growing in the Mareeba - Dimbulah area began in the late 1920's. Ballots were held for blocks of land - and a new industry, which was to bring in almost $50 million a year at its peak, was born.

This district became the biggest tobacco growing area in Australia. Mareeba no longer grows Tobacco as of the year 2004. Come and learn more about this unique agricultural history of the region.

Kuranda blossomed into a village with the coming of the railway from Cairns in 1891. Kuranda, the “Village in the Rainforest” is now a hive of tourist activity and is renowned for it’s scenic railway station, markets, spectacular rainforests, waterfall and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
