Pioneer Homestead

The Pioneer display pays tribute to the hardships the early settlers endured at the turn of the century. Filled with memorabilia from days gone by, here are items such as old lamps, gramophones, icecream churns and much more.

Did you know?
William Atherton , son of John Atherton founded Chillagoe in 1887 and the next year rich copper ore was discovered. Copper smelters were built in 1901 and the railway reached Chillagoe which soon boasted a population of 10,000.

Queensland Pioneers

In 1942 copper operations in the Chillagoe district ceased and today Chillagoe is known for its ancient limestone caves, which feature spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites, the old mining smelters and marble mine. The main areas of industry include cattle grazing and the mining of marble, copper and gold.
